The Goodness of God
The Goodness of God
Casey Clement
The goodness of God is just as relevant and vital in today’s modern society as it has ever been at any time in our human history. The Bible teaches us that God is not only loving, merciful, and gracious, but also that He is good in all of His ways. One of the most well-known examples of God's goodness can be found in Psalm 100:5, which says, "For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations." This verse highlights the fact that God's goodness is an unchanging and eternal attribute that is not subject to the whims or circumstances of this world. Another powerful demonstration of God's goodness can be found in Psalm 23, where David writes, "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake." These verses remind us that God is not only good but that He is also intimately concerned with our well-being. Yes, though not always of a physical or monetary nature God has a plan to prosper us. Additionally, the Bible teaches us that God's goodness is not just limited to an elect few as some modern Christian doctrines might claim, but it is available to all who believe and obey Him. As Romans 2:11 says, "For there is no respect of persons with God." Thus, God's goodness is impartial and unbiased. God is so good that He has made His goodness free and accessible to all who will come to Him with a humble and penitent heart. The goodness of God not only blesses us, but it also enables us to be a blessing to others. As Galatians 6:9-10 says, "And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith." Through the power of God's goodness, (like we noticed in last week’s article) we can become instruments of His grace and generosity to a world in need.
In short, the goodness of God is vital to the character of the child of God, for we are a product of Him. His goodness is an enduring truth that has the power to transform our lives beyond what we could imagine for ourselves. From His unchanging nature to His intimate concern for our well-being, God has demonstrated His goodness in a way that is both undeniable and awe-inspiring. If we will abide in His goodness and allow it to flow through us, we can become a reflection of His character and a source of hope and encouragement to all those around us. It is my prayer that we never lose sight of His goodness, and that it a long with His love remain at the very core of our being and the very foundation of our faith. And, that His love and goodness be the source of our strength.
"O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him." (Psalm 34:8)
