Win The Game You're Playing
WIN THE GAME YOU’RE PLAYING
Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”’ whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. James 4:13-14
I read an article about a little league team that had only one good pitcher. The team was scheduled to play 2 games in one week and the better team was the second. The coach wanted to save his best pitcher for the second game so he put in a sub for the first. After three innings they were behind by a couple of runs. By the end of the 5th they were behind by five runs. All of a sudden someone yelled from the stands… “Win the game you’re playing.” Baseball teams, football teams, basketball teams all lose games when they start looking past the game at hand. Many good teams have gone down to defeat because they did not concentrate on the game they were playing.
The Christian life can be that way too. It is easy to get caught up in some special event down the road and lose sight of the present. Certainly we need to be prepared for the tomorrow’s in life, but that’s one of the great benefits of taking care of today. Even Jesus said… “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:34
One of the differences between championship teams and teams who only dream of championships is that championship teams prepare for and play only one game at a time. Christians prepare for the future by walking with God one day at a time. I think that is just what Enoch did when it was said of him, “Enoch walked with God.” Genesis 5:24
Win the game you’re playing. Make every day count. Begin the day with a prayer of thanksgiving. Ask God to help you make the most of that day. Read from His word every day. Look for opportunities to serve Him every day. Don’t dream about what you would like to do. Just go and do it. And by doing these simple things, you will make the most of each and every day.
