Help Me
HELP ME
In 1923 Frederick Stanley Mockford, a senior radio officer at London's Croydon Airport created a distress signal that has become synonymous with a life-threatening emergency. "Mayday-Mayday-Mayday" repeated in succession is a call for help. According to the National Maritime Museum, Mockford coined the Mayday distress call from the French word m'didez, which means "help me." Since 1923 the "Mayday-Mayday-Mayday distress call has gone out hundreds of times.
We all need help at times. Our children need help as they grow up. They need help to learn the things they need to know. They need help to make the right decisions in life. But adults also need help at times. So where do we turn?
King David was one who knew he needed help as he led God's people. Many of the Psalms were David's cries for help from the Lord. In Psalm 86:6-7 he wrote, “Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications. In the day of trouble I will call upon You, for You will answer me.” Not only did David call upon the Lord when he needed help, he knew he was going to be heard.
The Christian has the same confidence in God, because not only can we call upon God for help, we have two additional helpers in delivering that cry. The first is Jesus Christ. I John 2:1”...we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” The second is the Holy Spirit. Paul wrote in Romans 8:26”...Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes inter-cession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” We all need help at times. God will hear His children when they call upon Him for help.
