Challenges for 2020 Vision
CHALLENGES FOR 2020 VISION
It is hard to believe that we are already into the 3rd decade of the 21st century. It seems that the years come and go faster than they used to. In fact, everything seems to change much faster than in the past. The problem I see is that there are too many changes taking place where change should not be an option.
Every day we hear of another church becoming more open to the changes that society is forcing on us. Changes in the role of men and women in church leadership. Changes in the biblical definition of marriage and gender identity. Changes in how to become a Christian and who we should or should not fellowship.
Long ago Jeremiah wrote to the people of Judah warning them about the changes that they were making to the laws of God. In Jeremiah 6:16 he wrote; Thus says the Lord: “Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls.” But they said, “We will not walk in it.”
Our challenge is no different today. We are still faced with those who boastfully say, “We will not obey the commandments of God.” Do you remember the warning Paul gave to Timothy about those who refuse to obey the truth of God’s word? Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. II Timothy 4:24 Respect for the word of God has been lost.
There is no doubt that more and more churches will be led astray by preachers, teachers, and elders who refuse to hold to the old paths. I believe this is the greatest challenge we will face in 2020. 2020 vision includes 2020 hindsight.
