What Grace Teaches
WHAT GRACE TEACHES
“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the
present age.” Titus 2:11-12
Were it not for the grace of God, we could never have any hope for salvation. Grace is God giving us what we do not in any way deserve. What we deserve is eternal separation from God and punishment for our sins. The grace of God is His way of putting His love into action. Because He loves us, He gives us His grace and provides an opportunity to be saved.
In the above text we find that grace is a teacher. The grace of God is not without conditions. There is a responsibility on our part to accept what grace offers, but we also need to understand what grace teaches.
Grace teaches us to deny ungodliness. Ungodliness is living in rebellion to the will of God.
Grace teaches us to deny worldly lusts, meaning we should do our best to avoid the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life as John wrote in I John 2:15-17.
Grace teaches us to live soberly, meaning sober minded. That includes the things we put into our minds by way of what we see, read, and think about. See Philippians 4:8.
Grace teaches us to live righteously. Righteousness is doing what is right in the sight of God.
Grace teaches us to live godly lives. To live in ways that are pleasing to God.
