Cheap Coffee?

Where Do You Get Your Coffee

I don’t like cheap coffee. I’m not a connoisseur by any means, but I have found that I much prefer the quality of small batch, fresh roasted coffee opposed to large scale, large volume that often exists in the most popular brands. Don’t get me wrong, I drink any coffee. In fact, you will still often hear me say, “I don’t care, none of it tastes that great” as I accept yesterday mornings reheated brew, but if given a choice, I will not purchase “cheap” coffee for myself.

I wasn’t always this way. A close friend of mine would “coffee shame” me for drinking the nasty stuff, and so I began to listen to him tell me the ins and outs of “good” coffee. He told me about roasting temperatures, and shelf life, and how elevation and location affect the flavor profiles. His morning routine involves hand grinding whole beans to pack into an “aero-press” (whatever that is) before slow-dripping his grounds at a     specified temperature, as the coffee pot maker just won’t do. I’m not quite as discerning as he is, but I have adopted a few specifications for selecting how I make my coffee, and I’m sure there are plenty of people who will throw any questionable product under hot water and slurp it up on their way to work.

There are different ways of accomplishing the same tasks. Some people have placed an immense amount of time and thought to their processes, that to us seem silly. Some people put very little thought into what they’re doing because they just need it done quickly. You don’t paint a barn and kitchen cabinets with the same amount of effort and detail.

What about the activities of our own life? How much better could your marriage be if you paid more careful attention and were intentional with your words and actions? What more could you accomplish if you didn’t put so much time and effort into a hobby that occupies so much attention. Am I putting an adequate effort in my pursuit of God and engaging with His people? You get out what you put in. Where are we putting our effort?

I Love You,
