Falling Leaves
Falling Leaves
As we head into Fall, things begin to change. The days become shorter, the leaves begin to turn and fill our yards, and somebody had the brilliant decision to move time backward so it would be dark when we all go home. It’s a reminder of the brilliance of God’s creation-that he created the entire cosmic universe that we would have consistency in time, seasons, and inherently change. I’m reminded of Ecclesiastes 3 where Solomon describes the ever-changing circumstances of our existence:
“To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven…”
Solomon goes on to describe various types of variation that exists as time continues: there are appropriate times build, break, weep, laugh, cry, dance, tear, mend, be silent, speak, love, hate, etc. The wisest man in the world recognized that there should be different responses appropriate to different seasons in life.
This seems to be in contrast to what we often see in our world today. We have become such creatures of habit that often the only thing that changes with the seasons is our attire and thermostat settings! God’s desire is not that people on Earth would settle into a routine and get comfortable. Rather, God has always called his followers out of their places of comfort to go out into the unknown. When people will follow God’s call to the uncomfortable places, he has reserved blessings there for them.
Abraham was called from his family at age 75 to go to a place where God would show him, and because of his faith to follow it was accounted to him as righteousness (Gen. 15, Rom 4). God’s message for people today who would follow him is to “take up his cross daily and follow [Him]” (Luke 9:23). To accomplish the mission of God is not to merely be a worship service attendee, but to get out of our comfortable pews to “go into all the world making disciples” (Mt. 28:19)
What season are you currently in? Should you be more actively seeking to impact change in the world or will the only change around you be the falling leaves?
I love You,
