Relaxing in God's Arms

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”

Psalm 23:1-5

David knew how to shepherd sheep, he understood their foolishness and recognized these patterns in himself. He called the Lord, my Shepherd, meaning his closeness to God revealed his own relationship with God. A shepherd is to guide, protect, and save his sheep from danger. Because God is this shepherd, he guides, protects and saves us, even when we’re foolish and stubborn. We can be at peace when we fully trust God to be faithful to him. And as the last verse says, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord, forever.” Psalm 23:6 We’ll rejoice and relax because we’ll be in God’s protecting hands forever.
